About the Doyen Rib Raspatory

The Doyen rib raspatory is a bone raspatory designed for the ribs. Bone raspatories have a profiled scraping edge that lifts the periosteum away from the bone, and the Doyen pattern shapes that edge into a curved hook that passes around the rib.

Because the hook curves one way, the instrument is made in left and right versions, and makers list adult, child and infant sizes. It is grouped with cardiothoracic and thoracic instruments in manufacturer catalogues.

Blade size, edge sharpness and handle form differ between makers, so side and size should be specified together.

What other names is the Doyen Rib Raspatory known by?

The Doyen Rib Raspatory is also known as Doyen rib rasp, Doyen raspatory.

What is the difference between a periosteal elevator and a raspatory?

The two terms overlap: "raspatory" is a traditional name, used especially in European catalogues, for an instrument that scrapes or strips periosteum and soft tissue from bone, a job also done by periosteal elevators. In practice, "raspatory" is often applied to sturdier designs with a sharp scraping edge, including curved rib raspatories shaped to pass around a rib, while "elevator" covers a broader range of lifting and separating instruments. Naming differs between suppliers, so compare blade shape and dimensions. See the Doyen rib raspatory and Farabeuf rugine guides.
