About the Boies Nasal Fracture Elevator
The Boies elevator is a nasal fracture elevator: a thin instrument passed into the nose and placed beneath the nasal bone so that a displaced fragment can be lifted outward. The AO Foundation surgery reference lists it among the instruments commonly used for closed treatment of nasal fractures, alongside Asch and Walsham forceps.
The working end sits between the septum and the nasal bone, where it acts as a lever on the displaced bone. Published descriptions note that its width is similar to that of the lateral nasal bones and that its tip is blunt and relatively thick.
Because of that thick, blunt tip, one clinical study reported that smaller, sharper periosteal elevators such as the Freer can reach narrow gaps that the Boies cannot, and compared the two approaches.
