About the Hegar Uterine Dilator

Hegar dilators are solid metal rods of increasing diameter used to dilate the cervix so that instruments can be passed into the uterus. They were introduced by Alfred Hegar in 1879 for gynaecology, and each rod is marked with a Hegar number equal to its diameter in millimetres.

The rods are round, slightly curved and end in a smooth conical tip. Double-ended versions carry a different size at each end; single-ended versions often have a flattened end for handling. Sets are used in sequence, starting with a thin rod and progressing gradually to larger sizes, and are commonly sold as sets of 8, 10 or 14 pieces.

Beyond cervical dilation, Hegar dilators are used to treat vaginismus and hymenal stenosis, and for anal and urethral dilation, dilating a narrowed gastrostomy stoma, and sounding the uterus.
