Guide to Medical and Surgical Instrument Trade Fairs

Updated 29 October 2026

Trade fairs are still one of the main ways surgical instrument makers meet distributors, hospital buyers and component suppliers. They are also where many buyers first see a new supplier’s products in person. There are hundreds of medical events each year, though, and only some of them are relevant to instruments. This guide covers the main international fairs, what each is for, and how to decide which to attend. Dates and venues come from our exhibition pages, which are checked against the organisers’ official websites. Always confirm details with the organiser before booking travel.

Three kinds of event

It helps to sort medical events into three groups:

  • Broad medical trade fairs cover the whole range of hospital products, from imaging to consumables. Surgical instruments are one sector among many. MEDICA, WHX Dubai and CMEF are examples.
  • Supplier and manufacturing fairs are for companies that make medical devices rather than those that buy finished ones. They show materials, components, machining, finishing and contract manufacturing. COMPAMED, Medtec China and MedtecLIVE are examples.
  • Specialty congresses with exhibitions are run by professional societies. The exhibit hall is attached to a scientific meeting, and visitors are mainly clinicians in one specialty. AAOS (orthopaedics), AORN (perioperative nursing) and IDS (dentistry) are examples.

Broad medical trade fairs

MEDICA, Düsseldorf

MEDICA is Messe Düsseldorf’s international trade fair for medical technology and healthcare, held each November. Its product areas include clinical diagnostics and therapeutic technologies, digital medicine, integrated care and rehabilitation, healthcare infrastructure, and medical imaging and laboratory equipment. The organiser’s visitor target groups include practising physicians and surgeons, hospital physicians and heads of nursing. For instrument makers, it is a place to meet distributors and buyers from many countries in one week.

WHX Dubai

World Health Expo (WHX) Dubai is the event formerly called Arab Health, run by Informa Markets. It is held across Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City and Dubai World Trade Centre as part of World Healthcare Week. Its sectors include medical devices and equipment, disposables and consumables, imaging, laboratory and diagnostics, and orthopaedics and rehabilitation. The organiser presents the medical devices sector as a place for manufacturers to meet buyers, distributors and procurement leaders. Our calendar also lists WHX Dubai 2028, scheduled for 20–23 March 2028.

CMEF, Shanghai and other Chinese cities

The China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) is held twice a year in China. The spring 2027 edition is in Shanghai, while the autumn 2026 edition took place in Beijing from 21 to 24 October. CMEF covers the medical industry chain from imaging and robotics to in vitro diagnostics and elderly care, and runs alongside ICMD, a show for components and manufacturing.

WHX Miami

WHX Miami, formerly FIME, is an Informa Markets fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center serving the US and Latin American markets. The organiser highlights it as a meeting place for manufacturers, dealers and distributors, with country pavilions on the show floor.

Regional fairs

Several fairs serve a single region well. Hospitalar in São Paulo, run by Informa Markets, is described by its organiser as Latin America’s leading healthcare fair. Medical Fair India, organised by Messe Düsseldorf India, alternates between New Delhi and Mumbai. Medical Fair Asia in Singapore alternates with Medical Fair Thailand in Bangkok. In Pakistan, Healthcare Expo Karachi runs from 8 to 10 April 2027 at the Karachi Expo Centre, with surgical tools among its listed product sectors.

Supplier and manufacturing fairs

If you make instruments, or source parts and services for them, a supplier fair may be more useful than a buyer fair.

  • COMPAMED runs alongside MEDICA in Düsseldorf. It covers components, materials, microtechnology, sensors, highly automated manufacturing, OEM services and packaging.
  • Medtec China, run by Informa Markets in Shanghai each September, shows raw materials, precision parts and production equipment for device makers.
  • MedtecLIVE in Stuttgart is dedicated to medical technology development and manufacturing. The next edition on our calendar is 20–22 June 2028.

Specialty congresses

Specialty meetings draw fewer distributors but put you in front of the clinicians who use and request instruments.

  • AAOS Annual Meeting is the yearly meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Its exhibit hall lets attendees compare orthopaedic technologies and join hands-on workshops. It is relevant to makers of orthopaedic instruments and implants.
  • AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo is run by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses. Its Expo Hall shows products for operating-room practice to OR nurses and leaders.
  • IDS (International Dental Show) in Cologne is organised by GFDI, the commercial arm of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI), and staged by Koelnmesse. Its organiser describes it as the leading trade fair for the dental community. AEEDC Dubai (19–21 January 2027) is a dental conference and exhibition whose listed sectors include surgical tools.

How to choose which fair to attend

  1. Start with your market. If you sell into the Gulf and Africa, WHX Dubai is the obvious choice. For the Americas, look at WHX Miami, Hospitalar or a US specialty congress. For Europe, MEDICA.
  2. Decide whether you are buying or selling. Instrument makers looking for distributors go to buyer-facing fairs. Makers looking for materials, machining or finishing partners go to supplier fairs such as COMPAMED.
  3. Check the exhibitor list. Most organisers publish exhibitor directories. Search them for your product category and for the companies you want to meet.
  4. Look at country pavilions. Many fairs host national pavilions, often supported by trade promotion bodies. Pakistan’s Trade Development Authority, for example, organises participation in international fairs. Pavilions are a quick way for buyers to meet many firms from one producing country.
  5. Book meetings before you go. Large fairs cover several halls. Contacting companies in advance saves time on the floor.

Checking suppliers you meet

A stand at a major fair does not mean a company has been vetted by the organiser. After the event, check a new supplier’s registration, quality certification and actual role, whether manufacturer, private label or trader. Our guides on how to check a medical instrument supplier and on company roles explain what to look for.

Our exhibitions calendar

Our full exhibitions calendar lists more than 70 medical, dental and medtech events, with dates, venues, organisers and links to official exhibitor information. SurgiFacts.com does not sell or reserve stands. Stand bookings are handled only by the organisers.
