About the Simcoe Irrigation-Aspiration Cannula

The Simcoe irrigation-aspiration (I/A) cannula is a fine ophthalmic cannula that combines an irrigation channel and an aspiration channel in one instrument. It belongs to the category of ophthalmic irrigation/aspiration cannulas: rigid or semi-rigid tubes, usually stainless steel, inserted into the eye to infuse fluid and aspirate during procedures such as phacoemulsification or capsule polishing.

In cataract surgery an I/A instrument is used after the lens nucleus has been removed, to clear the remaining peripheral lens (cortical) material, and later to remove viscoelastic from the eye.

The Simcoe name covers several variants from different makers: standard and reverse models, curved versions, double-barrelled units, and reusable or single-use designs. Port position and gauge differ, so the variant should be matched to the surgeon's technique.
