Graves Vaginal Speculum

Also known as: Graves Duckbill Speculum

Duckbill bivalve vaginal speculum of the Graves pattern, the design most commonly used for pelvic examination, Pap smears and gynaecological procedures.

Reusable hand instrument

About the Graves Vaginal Speculum

The Graves Vaginal Speculum is a bivalve (two-bladed) vaginal speculum. According to Wikipedia, T. W. Graves combined Cusco's hinged two-bladed design with the duckbill shape of the Sims speculum, and the Graves duckbilled speculum is the design most commonly used today.

The two blades are inserted closed and then opened. A screw mechanism holds them at the chosen opening so the examiner does not have to keep them apart by hand. This gives a view of the vaginal canal and cervix and room to pass instruments, for example to take samples.

It is made in a size series (typically small, medium, large and extra-large) and in both reusable stainless-steel and single-use plastic forms. Some disposable plastic versions include a light source. Modified and narrow variants, such as the Moore-Graves, are also catalogued.
