Westcott Tenotomy Scissors

Also known as: Westcott scissors

Spring-handled ophthalmic scissors with blades curved left or right, used for cutting delicate tissue in eye surgery.

Reusable hand instrument

About the Westcott Tenotomy Scissors

Westcott tenotomy scissors are spring-handled thumb scissors for eye surgery. Sklar describes them as commonly used in ophthalmic procedures and useful for cutting delicate tissue. Like other spring scissors, they are held between thumb and fingers and open by themselves when pressure is released.

Teleflex lists them with a flat spring handle and blades curved to the right or left, so the surgeon can pick the curve that fits the side being worked on. Tips are offered blunt or sharp: blunt for spreading and cutting tissue planes, sharp for precise cuts.

Besides left and right curves, straight versions are made, and wide-handle and different blade-length options appear in catalogues. A related pattern, the Westcott stitch scissors, is made for suture cutting. Disposable versions also exist.
